I got an occasion, in summer 1992, to be in conversation with Professor Thu Phu Nguyen, a young friend of  mine in educational activities, who had just completed his first work <<How to understand the life and language in France>> Comment Vivre en France et Connaître la Langue  Française (T́m Hiểu Đời Sống và Ngôn Ngữ Pháp). Professor Nguyen had some concerns about his first publication because of the negative feedback (some of the readers thought the book foccussed on the integration of Vietnamese political refugees into the French society mainstream. In my opinion, there are two remarkable things in its content :

1.- For any Vietnamese political refugee who wants to have a permanent life in France, this book offers  vivid  guidelines on the French culture. It is really a precious handbook for them.

2.- For those whose patriotic sentiment drives them to go back to Vietnam, this book is still a useful suggestion  for development of their fatherland .Likewise, it’s helpful for any students or families from Vietnam who intend to travel to or resettle in France.

For the above reasons, I have to sum up its content for the readers, and I appreciate his work for Vietnam and its people. This  book, since its maiden publication in 1994, has been welcomed, not only by the Vietnamese readers but by the French and Vietnamese scholars as well with their favorable comments.

Besides, to my knowledge, Professor Nguyen is about to publish his bilingual (French – Vietnamese) writings entitled :

 

- Practical Vocabularies (Vocabulaire Pratique)

- Practical Computer (Ordinateur Pratique ) 1, 2, 3

 

With his << 4000 Practical Vocabularies – Tome I>> I had the honor of giving him some advice for its completion. In this handbook, each picture is explained in 4 languages : English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese (Prof. Ha To Luu took charge in translating into Chinese). Its purpose is to help the younger Vietnamese generation either born in Vietnam or in France how to learn the Vietnamese language. And it’s  also useful to anyone who wants to increase his fluency in this tongue because Professor Nguyen tried to teach languages through his picture book in such aspects of life as school, market, transportation, zoological or botanical gardens....Especially, our  readers may get in this book some common expressions ,and helpful conversational phrases and sentences.  Professor Nguyen’s << 4000 Practical Vocabularies – Tome I>> is  greatly honored with the letter of introduction by Professor Aude de Perthuis, who currently teaches at “L’Alliance Française de Lyon “(the copy of LOI  enclosed here).

I am told that all the above publications of Professor Nguyen were highly valued and rewarded with the great medal of education <Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Đệ ngũ Đẳng Hàn Lâm) in Paris, France. Since then, professor Nguyen has chosen <HAN LAM> (academic) as his pen name.

I also recently learned that professor Nguyen ‘s <<4000 Practical Vocabularies – Tome II>>, with more beautiful pictures in six chapters, would  be published in the Spring of 2006.

All of Professor Nguyen’s books and writings about culture, languages, professions and horoscope....(*) are really valuable. We greatly anticipate that his subsequent publications will bring a lot of interest to the readers as well as the professionals . Therefore, It’s a great pleasure for me to introduce this  <<4000 Practical Vocabularies – Tome II>> to readers all over the world and to express my best wishes, by the way, to the author and  his family members.
